The fresh 1.5-litre GDI turbocharged petrol engine with four cylinders delivers about 168 PS of power along with 280 Nm of torque, and chances are that the same motor will also be seen in the upcoming Sierra.
Tata Motors is gearing up to introduce a fresh 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, which will help in widening the range for both the Harrier and the Safari. Earlier, it was indicated that the launch would happen towards the close of this financial year. But now, as per an exclusive update, the new powertrain is set to hit the market in November 2025, right in time to make the most of the festive season buzz.
The same engine is likely to be offered with the upcoming Sierra too, which will come in both ICE and electric versions. That said, the Sierra is expected to make its debut as an EV first, sometime in early 2026. Many carmakers have been seeing solid demand for petrol SUVs in the midsize segment, and a few of them are also giving buyers extra options like CNG, mild-hybrid, and strong-hybrid variants.
Tata rolled out the Harrier back in 2019, and a few years down the line, the Safari was introduced. Both SUVs currently come powered only by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine sourced from FCA, even though the brand has been quickly expanding its all-electric lineup. The eagerly awaited 1.5-litre turbo GDI petrol engine is likely to give a solid boost to Tata’s midsize SUV lineup.

Apart from making the SUVs more competitive, the new engine could also bring down the entry-level pricing of the models it gets fitted into. Delivering close to 168 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque, the 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor is expected to come mated with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
Recently, Tata also obtained the rights from FCA to update the 2.0-litre diesel engine. This removes the need to seek FCA’s approval whenever modifications are made to the engine. Now that Tata has more control over the engine’s tuning and development plans, the company is expected to work out smarter upgrade routes while also managing costs effectively.
This development carries extra significance considering the flexibility of the Multijet engine, which has been used in models such as the Jeep Compass, MG Hector, and Jeep Meridian. Still, even with this added freedom on the engineering side, reports suggest that the production of the diesel engine will carry on at the Ranjangaon plant.
