Volkswagen Group has achieved a very big milestone in the electric vehicle segment.
The company has now produced more than five million electric drive units worldwide.
This is a huge achievement for the brand and shows how serious Volkswagen is about electric cars globally. This five million mark was achieved with the help of production plants located in Győr, Kassel, Tianjin and Zuffenhausen.
All these plants are playing an important role in Volkswagen’s global EV expansion. The company is slowly increasing its electric production year by year and this number clearly shows that their EV plans are moving in the right direction.

Volkswagen APP550 Electric Drive System
If we talk about one of the most important electric systems, then the Kassel plant has a very big role in it. In 2025 alone, the Kassel facility increased production by almost 24 percent compared to last year and crossed more than 8.5 lakh units production. That is a big jump.
Among all the electric drive systems, the APP550 is currently the most used one. Only Kassel plant has already produced around one million units of this APP550 motor. This shows how important this system is for the company. The APP550 electric motor is used in many popular models of the Volkswagen Group like the Volkswagen ID family, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Tavascan. In its production version, this motor can deliver up to 240 kW power and 560 Nm torque. If we compare it with the older version, this new system consumes around 20 percent less energy. At the same time it gives nearly 75 percent more torque and almost 40 percent more power output. So performance has improved a lot.

What’s Next From Volkswagen?
Now looking ahead, Volkswagen is also working on strengthening its own in-house technology. The company is developing its own pulse inverter which will be used in future electric drive systems. This new technology will first come with the upcoming APP290 motor.
The APP290 motor is specially designed for the Electric Urban Car Family. This will include small and affordable electric cars like the ID Polo, Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval. These models will target city buyers who want compact electric vehicles.
The APP290 motor is expected to come in different power variants starting from 85 kW and going up to 166 kW. This means Volkswagen is preparing for the next generation of compact electric cars with better efficiency and performance.
Overall, Volkswagen Group reaching five million electric drive units is a big step forward in their electric journey and in the coming years we will see even more electric models from the brand.
