The Hyundai Creta EV rival is almost ready for Indian market. BYD, the Chinese electric car company, is preparing to launch its new Atto 2 midsize SUV in India and it was recently seen testing on Indian roads. The car already went on sale in UK few months back with price between £30,850 – £34,950, which converts roughly to Rs 36.45 – 41.30 lakh in Indian money. For India, since BYD does not have factory here and every car is directly imported from China as CBU, the Atto 2 price may come around Rs 35 lakh ex-showroom which is definitely on higher side when compared to rivals.
Size and Features
Dimension wise, BYD Atto 2 comes 4310 mm long, 1830 mm wide and 1675 mm tall with 2620 mm wheelbase. That means it is pretty much same size like Hyundai Creta, MG ZS EV or Tata Harrier. But the big difference will be in price because those cars are in 20-30 lakh range while Atto 2 will be close to 35 lakh.
On the feature side, Atto 2 is fully loaded. UK-spec model got:
- 12.8-inch big touchscreen which can rotate
- Wireless phone charging pad
- 8-speaker high quality sound system
- “Hi BYD” voice assistant
- 17-inch alloy wheels
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function for charging devices
Most of these things should also come in India version as well.
Battery, Range and Power
The most important thing about Hyundai Creta EV rival BYD Atto 2 is its Blade Battery with CTB (cell-to-body) tech. This is advanced tech from BYD which is said to be safer and more efficient.
In UK, two battery options are sold:
- 51.1 kWh battery → 344 km WLTP range
- 64.8 kWh battery → 420 km WLTP range
Performance is also decent as both versions can do 0-100 kmph in just 7.9 seconds and top speed is 160 kmph.
For India, most likely we will get only the 51.1 kWh version with real driving range of 340+ km on single charge. This variant produces 174 bhp power and 290 Nm torque, while the bigger 64.8 kWh pack makes 201 bhp and 310 Nm. Boot space is also quite good at 400 litres, expandable to 1340 litres with back seats folded.
Charging Options
Charging times are also impressive:
- 51.1 kWh pack → 82kW DC fast charger, 30-80% in 30 minutes
- 64.8 kWh pack → 155kW DC charger, 30-80% in only 21 minutes
- On AC 11kW charger → 5 hours 42 minutes for smaller battery, 7 hours 12 minutes for bigger one
So, on fast charger, the SUV can be charged quite fast compared to most EVs in market.
India Launch Timeline
BYD already filed design patent for Atto 2 in May 2024, and company earlier confirmed that it will launch a midsize electric SUV in India by end of 2025. With testing already started in India, launch looks very close now.
When it comes, the Atto 2 will compete directly with Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV and Tata Curvv EV. But pricing may become the big question here, since all rivals are 20-30 lakh, and Atto 2 will be priced higher because of import duty.
