10 Key Things About Tesla’s New Mumbai Showroom
- Reports say that the showroom will feature two popular Tesla models — the Model Y and Model 3 — for visitors to see. The Model Y is expected to be Tesla’s first car available for sale in India, and it will be brought in from China.
- The car will come in two versions: Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) with Dual Motor. Tesla Model Y SUV offers an impressive driving range of up to 574 km and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.6 seconds.
- It is reported that five fully assembled (CBU) Model Y cars from Tesla’s Shanghai factory have reached Mumbai, with each costing around ₹27.7 lakh (approximately $31,988). Because of a high 70% import duty on electric vehicles priced below $40,000, the overall price is expected to go beyond ₹48 lakh, which includes about ₹21 lakh as import tax, even before adding GST and insurance charges.
- India is applying an import duty close to 70%, which will significantly increase the cost of these cars. However, since there are plans for local assembly or contract manufacturing down the line, the prices of Tesla, the American electric vehicle giant, may come down in the future.
- Customers will be able to place their orders starting July 15, and deliveries are likely to start in August.
- As per Bloomberg, the first batch includes five Model Y cars imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory.
- Following Mumbai, Tesla is expected to launch its next showroom in Delhi, concentrating mainly on these two cities for now. But there is no official word yet on when Tesla plans to open showrooms in other cities.
- Tesla’s more affordable Model 3 will also be showcased at the showroom, but it is likely to be launched in India sometime later in 2025. The high-end Model 3 can go from 0 to 100 kmph in only 3.1 seconds, has a driving range of 507 km, and can reach a top speed of 162 kmph.
- Starting at $29,990 (about ₹25.99 lakh) in the US, the Model 3 benefits from a reduced 15% import duty under India’s new EV policy, which means the Model 3’s ex-showroom price in India might be close to ₹29.79 lakh. But when you add state taxes and registration fees, the total on-road price could go above ₹40 lakh, putting it in competition with cars like BYD’s Seal.
- Tesla opened its first showroom after receiving a trade certificate from the Andheri RTO, which allows the company to display, test drive, and sell its vehicles in India. Tesla has signed a 5-year lease for a 4,000 square feet retail space in BKC, paying ₹35 lakh every month. This showroom is located close to Apple’s main store.
